Mexico - In Mexico, Valentine’s Day is called El Día del Amor y la Amistad, or The Day of Love and Friendship. It’s a time to celebrate everyone you care about, from family to friends. Many Mexican people give gifts, balloons, and chocolates to important people in their lives.
England - In some parts of England, children wake up to the sound of knocking at the door. Jack Valentine leaves candy and small gifts on their porches...but no one is ever fast enough to catch him doing it!
South Africa - In South Africa, Valentine’s Day is a special time of love. Women wear the names of their beloved name on their sleeves in pride. Men and women exchange candies, gifts, and words of love with each other.
Denmark - In Denmark, men give women funny little anonymous poems on paper that is folded and cut like a snowflake. These poems are called gaekkebrev, or joke letters. If the woman correctly guesses who wrote the poem, her prize is an Easter egg, given on Easter.
South Korea - In South Korea, Valentine’s Day is just the beginning of their celebration of love! On February 14th, women give chocolate to all the men in their lives, from co-workers to husband. The men don’t reciprocate until March 14th, known as White Day. On that day, men give the women they love white chocolate and gifts.
United States - In the United States, Valentine’s Day celebrates love and friendship of all kinds. Children exchange cards with classmates in school, and families often plan a special meal or dessert together. Young and old people alike honor those they love with small gifts, candy, or flowers.
No matter what day it is, you can always brighten the day of those you love by sending a funny note, sharing a smile, or spending time together. Celebrate the people you care about every day!
